Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and people. – UN-

It is not my intention to go into complicated discussions about politics or religion. Love makes tolerance but it makes you also strong to stand up protecting your heart to be infected. A time ago and observing the enormous need to stop ego which originate hate and with the only intention to try to change the vibe, never too late, maybe not for ourselves but for our children and or young ones between us. Life is difficult enough for all of us but giving something from yourself not necessarily material, it’s always possible. All my love to everyone who collaborated to make these clips possible. A FREE HUG AGAIN.

Last Saturday 24 August, 2019 took place the First Edition of Taverne Open Air – festival Bergen NH
Under the Sun energy, we enjoyed to be connected by the power of live music and friendship above all perspectives.
Steef de Taverne who is leading the organization expressed on his FB account his enormous gratitude to ALL those who supported his vision from the very beginning till the hard work end.
With great enthusiasm public of different ages and nationalities enjoyed the versatile event made by the created environment at the many areas.
2 Stages, 9 Bands, 10 DJ’s, Chill Area & Fresh Food & Fries.

Blues guitarist singer Ralph de Jongh, this time with Friends Leon van Etten – Drums, vocals Almar Fernhout- guitar, vocals Pablo Penton – bass- vocals were one the of the highlights on the festival which attracted around 1400 visitors.

Live Music At the Taverne Bergen Stage
It was a mix of Blues Rock, Funk, Soul and even Reggae. All bands put with a great spontaneity awesome and unforgettable moments using their professionalism to over-win any small imperfection, resulting in magic moments for ALL of us

The opener of the festival immediately pops in Under the motto “play until you drop”, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Black Crowes, Billy Idol and The Rolling Stones, delighting their truly fans.

On the next slide Electric Hollers Band. However I have been already amazed by Tim Birkenholz guitar style earlier this year, it was the first time I enjoyed his band live with Max Mollema (drums) & Inge De Vries (Bassguitar) and I am truly impressed. They are one of the selected by the Dutch Blues Foundation to participate at the Dutch Blues Challenge in NL. The absolutely winner will go to represent The Netherlands at the yearly International Blues Challenge in Memphis USA where I made amazing memories with the first Dutch Blues winners in 2011.

The Onkruid Stage
filled in by popular DJs
music with many influences made the youngest ones experience even multicultural inspirations, which we enjoyed together after a couple of cold beers.
At the well needed Chill Area.
Meet point of friends and artist too for a drink and a talk tasting between others, exotic food.
Such a great time tasting Oysters, listening to the anecdotes from the owner who lived in the country where I come from. Taste the original South American coffee, served by Colombians.

There are things in life impossible to buy with only money so I appreciate my time in Bergen and I know Somebody is smiling from Heaven. Some will know what I mean.
We certainly want more!!! Taverne Open Air Festival. Till next year!!! Maggie Oliva https://www.facebook.com/mfeelingsfmusic.maggie

On Friday 5 and Saturday 6 of July took place in Diepenbeek  Belgium the 16th edition of the Hookrock Festival.  Being one of the festivals, where Belgian and Dutch Blues lovers, meet every year to enjoy the Blues & Roots music of their preference.

The musical spirit was high on both days, with many magical moments but within a relaxed atmosphere, cold beers, a fantastic line-up,  the jam sessions in between the  acts,  a birthday celebration but specially  with a  welcome feeling we let the power of music come all over us and that resulted in a weekend with an amazing explosion of joy.

The natural hospitality of Belgian friends completed these two wonderful days in addition to my reunion with some of the before mentioned international artists during their  European tour.

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace’ Its a Jimmy Hendrix quote but,  This is what truly happened at Hookrock Diepenbeek Roots & Blues festival in Belgium.

Remarkable moments once again with, Zac Harmon, who let the audience focus in the power of love ” Your love brought me here, your love will open many doors, I need each one of the audience to tell “I love you” to 10 people standing up near you, if this happens the energy of love will fill this place” He said.

Vanja Sky, already brilliantly recognized by the European Press, and also on European tour, said  “Music is the most wonderful gift on the planet. It’s my aim to bring happiness through music to many people as possible.” and she truly focus in bringing  and inspire young people to make and/ or enjoy real music.

The sunny Friday evening with the  soulful Belgian Blues quartet Extra Napkins, the Powerful performance, mentioned before, of the Croatian guitar player, singer song writer and beautiful performer Vanja Sky and Guitar player -Blues Singer Zac Harmon offering the best of his repertoire with the one by one talented musicians.

The Scandinavian Kokomo Kings  closed  with ” doin’ the low down boogie” at this brilliant musical day.

One Time Blues Band (BE) Travelin’Blue Kings (BE/NL) The Rockolites (BE) Lil’Red & The Rooster (USA/FR) Malford Milligan & The Southern Aces (USA/NL) Sugar Ray & The Bluetones ft. Little Charlie & Duke Robillard (USA) The Revolutionaries (UK)

On Saturday, there were many brilliant and dancing moments, starting with the Belgium band One time Blues Band  who full enthusiasm start this second day . they  are the interaction between male and female, conveniently represented by a female and a male singer and driven by a wide range of blues oriented styles. Some Chicago , some soul, some jazzy, some funk, all that invite you to dance.   They were followed  by  the Dutch, Belgium old hands in the professions the Travellin’ Blue Kings singer-guitarist-harpist Stephan Hermsen, once again surrounded by a bunch of race musicians brought an impressive own songs and selected covers performance.  At the beginning of this year the band came up with a great album “Wired Up”, which is mainly filled with swinging blues, who we will certainly enjoy them again at our next stop in Belgium Blues Peer Festival.

Again  a Belgium favorite The Rockolites.  The atmosphere was literally and figuratively HOT people outside enjoying friends and joining the jam sessions organized by MojoJamSessions. when a diva voice that walks voluptuously from Bessie Smith to Janis Joplin crossing without a hitch tonalities sounding  sincere and accurate  call our attention  the singer of Lil’Red & Rooster  the Multitalented  singer-songwriter, dancer, actrice Jennifer Milligan.

To complete the great surprises of the night the powerful but deep and soulful voice and impresive compositions he is often compared to soul icons such as Otis Redding and Percy Sledge. It is not without reason that he was awarded as best vocalist eight times at the Austin Music Awards.  Malford Milligan & The Southern Aces are soulful, rootsy, groovy and stripped-down. their  soul and blues fans were simply delighted, we much expect to see them at Blues Peer 2019 too. Malford Milligan ft. by the southern Aces, is formed, with among other talented musicians,  of the Dutch Fokke de Jong on drums and Roel Spanjers on Keys + Accordion.

The intense experienced festival, may be closed by Sugar Ray and the Bluestones ft. Little Charlie & Duke Robillard from the USA and The Revolutionaires from the UK,  They closed with honor, Hookrock 2019, the already well known festival point and friends meeting in Diepenbeek BE

Besides the live music recordings, live meet & greetings published at MFEELINGSFMUSIC in Social Media, you may enjoy to have a look at the http://www.hookrock.be  for more reviews and pictures.

We thanks the organization of Hookrock and kindly volunteers, feeling enthusiastic about the next year line up and looking forward to meet you and your beautiful audience again.

Music is the universal language that unites people. What a gorgeous day nearby home!!! Maggie in the house!!! were the welcome words of Sjoerd Greveling at the entrance of the festival,  who together with Peter Alkemade and Edwin Gronenboom form the committee of “Stichting Kasteel van Rhoon” for “MUZIEK OP RHOON”

Mixed up with the  jazz, blues, funk and soul music  and as a surprise Dutch folk music. The festival counted 1,400 people enjoying from noon to midnight of the carefully composed line-up of artist presented on stage by Johan Derksen .

Kraak & Smaak + band, Ida Nielsen & The Funkbots (DK, bass player Prince), Erwin Java ft. Kat Riggens (USA), Arp Frique, Kim Hoorweg (sings Amy Winehouse), Diona Fox & her Ragdolls, DJ Onno Paloma and as a special surprise Lee Towers.

QUE CALOR!!! (it’s hot)   Ah..my mother tongue, and that came from deep inside!. It was a very hot day indeed, but the organization took good care about that, providing enough water and creating shadow with the multi-functional  huge parasol in the middle of the field right on front of the stage, enough place to seat but also you could go away from the hustle and bustle along a walk in the woods next to the imposing Rhoon Castle. On the field were around 7 trucks selling food and a wide bar.

With this Multicultural and international character”Muziek op Rhoon” besides making  national and international talented artists and amazing musicians, available for everyone.   They made one of my dreams real,  cause in the early 2000,  I started MFEELINGSFMUSIC & Cultures with the only altruistic goal to see people united by the power of music, dance and art.  However I realize that this was an impossible mission at that time. therefore,  I was  truly delighted watching the pleasant atmosphere now,  how people and myself, enjoyed from Polonaise to funk, from  blues and soul to Latin. People everywhere all ages just celebrating  live,  together enjoying the power of music.

Kim Hoorweg

Her long and international journey can be read on her nice website. But now back on scene performing an Amy Winehouse special.  The well known songs made the audience naturally participate but brought by Kim, with incredible deep emotion.  Why Amy I asked? … I am being touched for the things she went through, she answered.  Oh, do you think it is what could happen to some young artists today? …yes not only artist but  young people in their fight trying to be accepted and to belong somewhere mostly looking for affection.

Erwin Java Band (NL) ft. Kat Riggins (USA)

Expressive as Blues can be, was brought by Erwin Java band and Kat Riggins.  Highlight moments with in between awesome guitar  and Hammond solos and the brilliant performance and colorful long dress of Kat Riggins bringing as always a powerful concert from beginning till end.  Her passionate song “Hear Me”  and the classic but at her brilliant own style “I put a spell on you” touched the depths of my soul.

Ida Nielsen & The Funkbots (DK, bass player Prince)

“I would not be where I am today if it was not for him, and I will do everything I can to move on and honor him by keeping the musical standard high and my heart open and kind”  … Ida Nielsen’s words about Prince.  After an absolutely amazing performance. They really, really FUNKED the place.

In between all acts, DJ Onno Paloma was  playing ”
All the bands were presented by Johan Derksen, Last year he was also the presenter of the festival.  An smooth atmosphere besides Jazz, blues, funk, soul, young and old also children made a hodgepodge or joy.

Arp Frique

Pulsating NYC style live disco vibes, interwoven with both Caribbean and Cape Verde sounds, The Colorful World of Arp Frique is exotic and super funky, all original instrumental tunes,  and brought the atmosphere at its highest point.

23rd Edition of Ribs & Blues Festival Raalte NL- 2nd Day- June 9th, 2019

Raalte, June 9th, 2019

Written  by: Maggie Oliva – MFEELINGSFMUSIC

Pictures by: Walter Wouters

This early morning at sunrise a nice barefoot walk on green grass made detox miracles. Feeling one with nature and music, however excited to see as much as possible of the richly filled program.  On the longest festival day  of Ribs & Blues 2019 counting at the Main Stage selected International artist: Nona, Matt Schofield, Wilko Johnson, Flavium, Eli Paperboy Reed, De Wolff, Laurence Jones and Delta Stage: Legendary Shack Shakers, Mell & Vintage Future, Dynamite Blues Band, Tricklebolt, Cedric Burnside, The Grand East.

NONA and Band (NL)

As the perfect band to open the Festival on this sunny day.  Suddenly, the field became in no time crowded.

”The rock from home, the blues from Steve, the hip-hop love of herself: all those influences flowed together”

Everything what Nona compose are real live stories and many compositions her own live stories.  She is constantly writing that’s what you hear during her performing, a young girl who was looking to be herself and when she knew it,  went for it, with all her courage. We can feel there beautiful scars translated into music, her own music.  The true affection and recognition for her band members, family and friends who contributed to her success that continues rising  as I can see in their upcoming presentations.  The band with great guitar solo’s and keys brilliantly,  tailored for the audience a wonderful start of this day.

Matt Schofield band (UK)  & Special guest Christine Tambakis (USA)

Matt Schofield has been making his mark globally, as one of the top players in the new class of six string.  Three times consecutive award winner at the British Blues Awards brought him to the British Hall of Fame.

In the Netherlands,  He played at North Sea Jazz, and on TV show “Vrije Geluiden”. In 2013 at Ribs & Blues where he stole many Dutch hearts and they are glad to see him every year touring in the Netherlands.
At the end of last year I was delighted to enjoy his live show  with 4 G Sessions performing with Jim Suhler, Alan Haynes, Danny Giles  at the Festival  “Flirting with the Blues” at the Flint in Amersfoort NL. This was actually the first time  for me,  to see him live on stage. Short after  Matt Schofield brought his renewed blues playing  together with the Dutch band The Kings Rhythm Crew (Ruud Weber, Fokke de Jong en Govert van der Kolm) at P60 in Amstelveen NL.  There I meet them for a short interview about this tour,  followed by an evening with Matt Schofield by  Max Guitar in Scheveningen. The Hague.

“I remain a music lover first and foremost. The recognition I’ve received from both fans and peers is humbling and inspiring, and those ‘pinch me’ moments where I found myself trading licks with heroes like Robben Ford and Buddy Guy are still the biggest thrill.” .. He usually says.

This time at Ribs & Blues 2019,

Matt Schofield with his fresh blues sounds and as well known compositions like  -Trouble Making-   Life Wire – Tails and Aces , the band tight and together,  made the audience thrill, but this time Matt enthusiastic announced a special guest on Stage:  Christine Tambakis from NY, who with her powerful performance and an amazing mix of voice genres, was the perfect passionate combination  for Matt’s guitar. At this point they got the euphoric moment at the audience with the song “Mama he treats your daughter mean”  After the show we meet and greet Christine and Matt who happily expressed that they are going to work together in  next productions and more live shows.  At the same time Christine added, that it is an honor and a privilege performing with the absolutely amazing Matt Schofield and band.  “I am  so thankful to be a part of this inspiration”, she said with brightly  eyes.

image033image027Matt Schofield UK

Wilko Johnson UKimage034

An impressive surprise the vitality from beginning to end of lead singer- guitar player Front-man of Dr. Feel Good with who he made four successful albums in 1970. In 1980 he became a prominent member of Ian Dury & The Blockheads. In 2010 he was asked for the role of Ilyn Payne in the hit series “Game of Thrones”. For four episodes he played a prominent role there.   When I saw them I thought .. What a survivors.. but Wilko really is, literally and figuratively a survivor. The Trio Lead Singer, Bass guitar and Drums  gave it all on stage.  Deep respect!

Hurrying  to the Delta Stage but also a little time for us to enjoy the festival field, greeting friends and taste a cold beer at the Special beer Bar, watch  the summer atmosphere and the children at the adventure land. Then  time to eat at the Barbecue land. It was entertainment enough for all ages. I still wish I was able to see all the bands I mentioned before but in this  “impossible mission” I only arrived at the Delta Stage on time to enjoy a band, who stands for an explosive cocktail of blues, rhythm & blues, swing and rock ‘n’ roll; raw, refreshing and exciting at the same time! Founded in February 2013 and emerged from the successful blues band “Big Blind”

The Dynamite Blues Band (NL)

The Dynamite Blues band, at the Delta Stage introduced  by Lianne Ruijgrok, who represents The Dutch Blues Foundation. The band won last year The Dutch Blues Challenge and represented The Netherlands  at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis USA.   At the European Blues Challenge in Portugal,  where they reached the 3rd position at the competition between 20 others European Bands.

The organization of Ribs & Blues, received on stage the announcement from Lianne Ruijgrok and Leo Gabriels,  on behalf of the Dutch Blues Foundation, that they will receive a Dutch KBA Award this year. The award ceremony will take place on 6 October during the Blues Day 2019 in Nieuw-Vennep. This award is annually granted to people or organizations that have made an important contribution to Blues Music the last years.

On his “50 Years of Blues Power Tour, we enjoyed FLAVIUM at Ribs & Blues 2019 and we were feeling  truly blessed being  there to see the band performing so as actually on stage was : Anne-Geert Bonder- guitar, Eric Bagchus- bass – Bert Vrieling -leadsinger-Willem Swikker keys, en Bouke Van Olst, drums.

So many years,  of music history and still the same powerful performance. Anne Geert Bonder- Guitar and Eric Bagchus from the very beginning of the band in 1969. Amazing live stories in the audience specially  because the band keep the real FLAVIUM  Sounds alive.  There were many emotional moments in the audience and I was lucky to stand up  near Marion & Rien Wisse – Ex Dutch Magazine Blok who certainly know a lot of the Dutch and international Blues history.

The since 2014 Flavium lead singer Bert Vrieling with his raw sound rock-blues voice in frequency with the visible emotions of the public,  transported us back in the time with songs registered at the “50 Years of Blues Power” new album with the highlighted song “Nobody Knows you When You’re Down and Out” but also with another pearls of the FLAVIUM repertoire. We were extremely delighted with the guitar solo’s of Anne Geert Bonder. Shake my soul!!!! .. the same energy as guitar legend Eelco Geeling, made me remember the live show they gave, on April 2015 when the Dutch Blues Foundation presented the Dutch Blues Awards 2014 in Best Western Hotel de Rustende Jager in Nieuw-Vennep. Flavium was inducted  there in the Dutch Blues Hall Of Fame.

Cedric Burnside (USA)

Blues Music award winner in May 2014, in the category of ‘Instrumentalist – Drums’. and  again in 2019. His album Descendants of Hill Country, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2016 for best Album. The son of R.L. Burnside  and born in Memphis Cedric Burnside the singer songwriter that brought us last Sunday 9 June in an imaginary fly to the Crossroads with his performance  alternatively on guitar and drums with  songs such us  “Come on in”  “All night Long” “We Made It”  from Cedric Burnside’s new album “Benton County Relic”. “Shake ’em On Down” between other classics pearls interpreted with contagious passion.

DeWolff (NL)

De Wolff (NL)

Since the prize at “Kunstbende”  in 2008, a number of times in the main hall of Amsterdam’s Paradiso. In 2010  followed by concerts  in Belgium and Germany. The band had its first Pinkpop performance on Sunday, May 30, 2010.

I met Pablo, Luka and Robin  in 2012 at the Bibelot in Dordrecht at the old music temple during the time I worked there as stage manager assistant.   At this young age they were dealing with an international schedule.  including France (Nancy, Rouen), Hungary (Sziget, Budapest) and Italy (Live Rock Festival, Sienna). In 2012, performances were given in France, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Poland. In November 2011, DeWolff signed a record deal with the record company GoSet Music, which released the single “Don’t You Go Up The Sky” and the album Orchards / Lupine in Australia and New Zealand. On 8 May 2012 this album was released in Italy by the record company OTR Live / Universal.

Internationally they were on main stages by Arezzo Wave Festival (Italy) and Zappanale Festival, Bad Doberan (Germany) as well as many club shows in Australia, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Russia.

Their next album, Grand Southern Electric, was released in May, 2014 recorded in the USA. Since 2015, DeWolff has its own record label called Electrosaurus Records, their first release is a double live album with the title: Live & Outta Sight. Subsequently, on February 2016, the album ROUX-GA-ROUX was released in the 100% analogue studio, Electrosaurus Southern Sound Studio, built by DeWolff itself. This album is fully produced, recorded and mixed by themselves.

The seventh album, THRUST, was launched in May,  2018. The album contains 11 songs. On 11 February 2019, DeWolff , won an Edison in the ‘Best rock act’ category.

De Wolff  live at the free entrance Ribs & Blues Festival 2019 was a gift from  Music Gods, the next day they were schedule to play at Pinkpop Festival.  However they played and sang at Ribs & Blues like it was the last time, with an enthusiasm without limits. We enjoyed their powerful performance and the unique sound art of a mature and hard  team- working band. We  noticed during their tight energetic performing with a singular consistency and timing on stage  and the same inexhaustible energy when they talk about their music projects or music friends or inspirations.

The visible high quality of this 3-headed Rock Dutch band and the created energy at the tent , was without doubt,  the needed adrenaline of the night.

Welcome moment picture, with DeWolff, arriving at Ribs & Blues Festival 2019.  Robin Piso, Pablo van de Poel and Luka van de Poel

The Grand East (NL)

To see the band we had to make choices not being at the  Main stage this time.  The Grand East are the favorites of many festivals this year too. They keep changing from 70s sounds to the last recordings Electrosaurus Sessions with Pablo van de Poel (DeWolff)

On December last year, they recorded a live session in the Electrosaurus Studio’s, where they also recorded their album ‘What a Man’.

This live session was recorded direct to tape by Pablo van de Poel, with no mixing afterwards, no overdubs, it wasn’t even mastered.

The Grand East is back. And how. They will release a new album. With new influences such as Velvet Underground and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, they bring their sound to the now. Live they still give a steaming rock and soul show.
The Grand East keeps everything in their own hands for their new album. They release it on their own label, which was set up with their fans. After more than 40 festivals and 2 own club tours in 2017, it is time for a new chapter.

Laurence Jones (UK)

The well-known Laurence Jones and band were in charge to close this crowded and amazing Sunday.

The festival was at her top time of excitement when, I quick greet Johan Derksen backstage on his way to the artist area. He just arrived and was getting ready to present Laurence Jones on stage.

Laurence Jones tour about 10 years being at his 17th Three consecutive times the winner of the “Young artist of the year award of the British Blues Awards,

being inspired by,  so as he use to say, his heroes. John Mayer, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Hendrix

He has played with many well -known musicians of the  as Status Quo, Gary Clark jr.  Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Joe Bonassa, In the Netherlands, With Buddy Guy  in 2017 at HIBF Grolloo.  At the same festival in 2018, but the Dutch Blues scene embraced his talent from the very first time.

This time at Ribs & Blues 2019 Laurence and his band put the scene on fire with his band and 2 nice ladies on the backing vocals;  playing energetic, tight together,  succeeding  in making cross-over blues available to all at this wonderful edition.  Keyboard player Bennet Holland created again,  the spice between the songs, just fantastic to see him in action.

Laurence Jones expressed his enthusiasm about the coming release of their new master album creation called “The Truth”

The beautiful audience expressed having the best time of their lives and we too!

Tomorrow another day!!!

23rd Edition of Ribs & Blues Festival Raalte NL- First Day- June 8th

First Day

Raalte, June 8th, 9th, 10th 2019

Written by:  Maggie Oliva  MFEELINGSFMUSIC

Pictures by: Walter Wouters

The days before the Festival seemed too long,  expecting the biggest and free entrance Roots and Blues festival of the year.   We noticed it because the enthusiastic announcements at Instagram and more social media  growing faster and faster the last months.

On our way to Raalte from Spijkenisse it was still raining so we arrived to our cute decorated and peaceful B&B place to stay. Parking nearby and the short walk was unbelievable under the nice sunshine. Mother Nature knew  that the Festival will start and order immediately to stop the rain and as a present for ALL, this weather held till the very end of this gorgeous happening in the Netherlands.

It was great to see the presenter, the well known face of the festival year after year  again with his friendly smile  Mr. Jaap Harsem who enthusiastic announced the brilliant line up of this First Day Live Music.  Gov’t Mule, Blackberrysmoke and My Baby.

This time, he remarked the Delta Club as a new attraction initiative at this Edition.

Warren Haynes – Gov’t Mule

And there they were again:  Gov’t Mule (USA) launching Ribs & Blues 2019 with the song Hammer & Nails “It takes more, more than a hammer and nails, to make a house a home, followed by great compositions as Mule, Pressure, Banks, Rev. come, Blue Sky, Stone Cold Rage, Confess and one of my favorites because my memories at HIBF in Grolloo 2016 Live SOULSHINE, but then came the expected moment for  Warren Haynes, lead singer-songwriter and guitar player of the band to announce his special guest on stage:  Charlie Starr lead singer and guitar player of Blackberry Smoke. It was the high moment of his show which the audience responded with a passionate applause.  I personally love the musicians interactions happenings on stage of the last times in live music.

Between the huge audience were many people I know from music organizations and festivals, some friends and also many social media contacts, it was nice have a quick meet and greet with many,  I believe that there is always a right time to meet those who you will be happy to see.

Once at the Colorful Delta Club,  described as burlesque shows.  including parody, beautiful girls dancing, acrobatics- entertainment, who transported  us in something different and original, many happy faces and whole families enjoying that.

Charlie Starr BlackBerrySmoke band & Warren Haynes

Charlie Starr /BlackBerry Smoke

Up to the Main Stage second band of the night with the Blackberrry Smoke

With their long, lank hair, dynastic beards and  denim jackets, pushing the boundaries of their chosen genre, and dragging it into a new decade from the very first note.

They carry at least the DNA of the Allman Brothers. It was amazing for me to see them for the first time live performing.     Two  “Number One” Country albums under their belts. Men would immediately feel they are authentic and the lead singer, guitar player Charlie Starr delighted us with songs from their last album : “Find a Light” but another audience favorites too like:  Fire In The Hole, Nobody Gives A D, Thunder, Good One, Let it Burn, Medicate, Big Boss Man, Ain’t wasting time, Sleeping Dogs. Run Away and more.

Just beautiful, some open-heart lyrics and some mournful pedal steel guitar,  played and sang with noticeable pleasure but even more when he called Gov’Mule on  stage I can almost say that this was the higher energy point of the night.  After the show we had a short talk with Warren Haynes and Charlie Starr who answering my question:   What was your highlight of the night?  … They both pointed each other and answered unanimously “Playing with him”

MY BABY was here.

Cato van Dijck

In the summer of 2015 they toured Europe to promote their second album “Shamanaid”. The album was played on BBC Radio and Belgium Radio 1. In strong demand at festivals such as Lowlands (NL), Into the Great Wide Open (NL), Sziget (HU) and playing at no less than seven alternative stages at Glastonbury 2015, they were chosen by Seasick Steve as the opening act on his April 2015 UK tour

On September 2015,  I hosted them backstage at a well known festival in Rotterdam NL   We enjoyed their music at Ribs & Blues 2017, I also remember the day, they set through the storm at Zwarte Cross festival. So we know what we may expect from this wonderful  Dutch -New Zealand trio.  Cato van Dijck, Joost Sheik van Dijck drums and singer, Daniel ‘Da Freez’ Johnston (guitar) My Baby has created the perfect bridge between rock and dance. Standing still is impossible. They are conquering the world and has  been at many shows on (main)stages at the bigger festivals in The Netherlands and Europe.

This year at Main Stage on the First day of the 23 Edition of Ribs & Blues. We went in their imaginary story and went into a kind of trance, specially with the songs of  the  last created album “Mounaiki” : Which is the shamanistic name given to the main character and to experience the travel that the phantom muse  is going through. Mounaiki is a ‘spirit name’ .  It means ‘love and will’, or the combined energy of love. At the point in a dance trance you will feel that energy.

Cato van Dijck lead singer, guitar. Joost Sheik van Dijck drums and singer, Daniel ‘Da Freez’ Johnston (guitar)  MY BABY

Describing the  show. A beautiful voice breaking through the darkness and transforming in light with the Powerful frequencies of the drums creating space for the guitar and or violin sounds and the voices sounds more than specific lyrics making an energy to be transmitted to the audience who at the same time responded  with their voices and applause sounds creating an energy circle in the place.  Besides the music and hypnotizing performance the band is nice to see this time Cato lead singer, guitar and violin player wore a kind of black with red flowers, Kimono style tunic and during the show changed in a translucency black short tunic and one piece golden pant. J. Sheik  on drums, Cato’s brother at the same start also with nice extravagant accessories and then  sensually shirtless and Daniel typical the Blues Spirit  and look including a black hat. They are a feast for the eyes!image073image062image106

After the show they made a little time for a hangout and a relaxed conversation.  Nice to interchange multicultural experiences with them I am impressed they remember the moments we shared.  What’s next I asked,  a Tour in December this year starting in Croatia.  Tomorrow we will fly to Scotland.  and the highlights? we are hitting this year again Glastonbury, Lowlands, another festivals?  in UK., Germany, Denmark, France, Estonia, Hungary, Czechoslovak Republic, in the Netherlands: Rock your Boots,  Parkpop, Bospop, North Sea Jazz Festival and 5 jaar Grenzwerk,  as far as we know, they added.

With a grateful heart but with high music adrenaline yet,  we left the festival place to our comfortable B&B  this time, but I still nostalgic remember the camping times when I use to come back home with dirty feet, messy hair and sparkling eyes.

I feel lucky  to catch some hours sleep, before the next whole intense day tomorrow .. from 01.15 pm till 01.00 am  full programming 7 bands at Main stage and 6 at the Delta Stage.

It will be continue:

“Really close to PERFECT” is how the awesome audience and camping blues fellows,(who I admire and respect)  described this Editon.  We were expecting a double rainbow after the rain. But the Sunshine was on the fantastic line-up check it out!

Mr.Zac Harmon and band delighted us again as always. The Netherlands,  is becoming your 2nd home Mr. Zac, I funny commented. We enjoyed the hanging out actually looking for Mr. Nico Bravenboer (Bluezy)  but in our way around we met so many festival organizers,  so wait for the surprises to be announced.

Surprise after surprise in between the shows.  One of them,  Ian Siegal at the Moulin Blues Cafe with Beaux Gris Gris. Yes we got the  Message Ian!

I need to remark, my personal respect, and gratefulness,  for the strong beautiful woman of the audience, who allowed me at the front and even held me on her shoulders,  so I was able to film. I appreciate that, cause there is not much I am able to remember if I don’t see it.  (Photographic memory, one of my top secrets)

Emotional moments with Phil Bee’s Freedom who mentioned during his show our friend, Bert Reinders, The Bluesman,  who  at that moment was still in coma and natural fighting for his live. Hugs and love for your talented musicians, Phil.  We are always keeping an eye on Guy Smeets, young Dutch talented guitar player and enjoying the holy backing vocals of this band.
Besides his exceptional performance with every time new talented guests, We truly appreciated MIKE ZITO .. Peace words during his show on a special day as May 4th, commemorating all civilians and members of the armed forces, who have died in wars or peacekeeping missions.
The Proven Ones. where KID RAMOS knew to reach our souls and hearts… again with his extraordinarily guitar sounds and Brian David Templeton  who amazed us on the vocals.

The Blues Giants and Guests made the farewell of the 34th MOULIN BLUES Edition an unforgettable one.  Sugaray Rayford + Nick Schnebelen + Albert Castiglia + Jimi Bott + Willie J. Campbell

Early in the morning I wrote “Music is the shivering of life, the invisible power to build your own world, the light to point you the way. Getting ready for a new brand amazing day at Muziek op Rhoon 2018     Maggie Oliva   and it really was.

The yearly Jazz Funk Soul festival welcomed the Blues Music and this time so close to my place.
The green place surrounding the marvelous castle made a perfect day of a Hot Musical day,  in all the meaning of the word.
The enthusiastic multicultural public of all ages walking around, dancing, drinking and enjoying different kind of food and  even the beautiful eyes of S. Soares Olivera who transformed in a theater the rest room, complete the scene of one of the festivals which will be engraved in my soul.

At the entrance the bands Westend Trio & Thijs Nissen Trio,  welcomed the public who looking for some shadow shelter and drinks went to the tent near the bar.  It was a pleasure to greet public from my area but also some coming from far away after 3 hours drive.

Ralph de Jongh Band

After the much appreciated words of the Festival host, Johan Derksen, the opening of the day was in hands of Ralph de Jongh ‘Musical child’ of Dutch Blues Legend Harry Muskee. This time He successful filled the stage with his in total 9 men/women band, musicians close to his heart, who at the same time collaborated with him in the making of his last albums. which are, in his own words, the expression of his inner world as well as his painting and poetry. The band powerful blues- funked the stage with Ralph’s own musical compositions  and  sublime ballad moments out the sky picked up lyrics and Cuby & the Blizzards’ Windows of my Eyes” song accompanied by the almost-crying violin of Ewa Pepper, this was my tiny sacred magic moment.

Sherry Dyanne

Dutch singer Sherry Dyanne with Caribbean roots is one of Holland’s best jazz singers. She collaborates with big artists, performs with her own band across the world in sold-out clubs and festival stages, received a Edison Award nomination for her debut album ‘Sing me a Song’ and sold over 38.000 albums of her latest christmas album ‘Let it Glow’ in the USA.  Her show this time was lovely and she created a harmony atmosphere with her inspiring songs inviting people to dance at this beautiful evening.  A publishing and pictures will show up at the local newspaper.

The first time I met Sherry was at North Sea Jazz Festival 2013.  At the time with a busy schedule  and now with her 7 months old baby.  It was time to have lunch together where we had a friendly and relaxed conversation recording which I probably publish if she agree.

When I came back to the field, people was enjoying the ROSENBERG TRIO

AJ Plug

Johan Derksen welcomed AJ Plug Band on stage, he mentioned the way he discovered the talented Blues Singer and band, the tour they are doing with the “Pioneers van de Nederpop”and recommended the audience the new Cd of the band “Barefoot, the Grolloo Takes” .

After the tight, blues -Rock delicious performance of the one by one talented musicians, we congratulate Alexandra Plug for her new epic creation at Dutch Holy Ground.

“We wanted to make something very pure that’s why we moved to Grolloo and wrote – Barefoot,  the Grolloo takes” she said.

A short time ago Alexandra Plug  moved to Grolloo, known as the Dutch Blues Village, where Johan Derksen is also living. Grolloo will always fascinate me. Since my first visit in 2008-2009 to see blues soul Ralph de Jongh performance and of course Blues Legend Harry Muskee

Brooklyn Funk Essentials

The Brooklyn Funk Essentials was fantastic to close the festival. They are made up of musicians, singers and poets from around the globe, the group and their famously mix styles like jazz, latin, r&b, house, drum & bass, reggae , afrobeat and Anatolian melodies.
made us all rolled into one ferocious funk fest with wild grooves. We truly thanks the organization of Muziek op Rhoon  for the kind invitation, and good news.  Of course we will come back next year 29th of June 2019 to enjoy Erwin Java and Band, Laurence Jones and the band Arp Frique.

The Wild Romance band, original accompaniment of Herman Brood, opened the program at the Tribute stage  and presented their single  “Curly Straight”,  live to their fans at the yearly successful Dutch festival in Emmen,  Last 9 of June 2018  Listen to Curly Straight

In terms of energy and frequencies, the band keep projecting the Wildest Romance of the last century with Herman’s Brood songs like Checking Out, Skid Row, Champagne and Wine, Never be Clever, I love you like I love Myself,  Saturday Night and more. David Hollestelle has taken over the sound from guitar player Dany Lademacher, talented adjusting the set list somewhat till Dany’s Lademacher promptly return.

Talking with the audience:

The energy  the band is carrying inside  is authentic  music DNA from Rock & Roll legend  Herman Brood.  We are lucky to see this live on stage and so grateful to the people who are ‘anyway’ making this possible. I heard it from the enthusiastic audience!

22nd edition Ribs & Blues Festival Raalte NL. May, 21th 2018

May 21st, 2018 Raalte

Written by: Maggie Oliva – MFEELINGSFMUSIC

Photographer: Walter Wouters

After a healthy breakfast we left the farm and arrived at the Restaurant-Lounge Zwakenberg in Raalte, whose motto is “Enjoy every moment”  Good coffee and thinking about taking my vitamin C .. one shot of Tequila Lemon. Bam!

With a festival mood and  totally recharged we walked directly to the Main Stage.

Ten Years After (Main Stage) Bluebirds (Delta Stage)

There was considerable expectation for the musicians, the front row was in no time full of the, ready to rock audience. Fantastic atmosphere, splendid weather and, of course,  the hugs, meet and greetings from the warm Blues family around.

Ten Years After will never be the same again, however it’s a very tight band that really radiates the sound and the feeling of the original line-up.   Guitar Player-Singer Marcus Bonafonti was chosen to follow the footsteps of Alvin Lee, who  performed the very last time at  Ribs & Blues 2012.  The band hold an explosive, energetic performance from beginning till the end. Old sentiment audience as well as young people were amaze of the musicians potential.

In the mean time The Dutch beautiful young ladies: Elske DeWall, Krystl & Rachel Louise “The Bluebirds” opened the show at the Delta Stage.  Creating the good feeling on the area with new country music. check more to learn about this new Dutch Trio The Blue Birds

Leif De Leeuw – Ryan Garvey (Main Stage)

The succesful Dutch,  Leif De Leeuw  Band, played The Allman Brothers Band and presented their “Live Music Album” during Ribs & Blues Festival.

Leif De Leeuw is a talented Dutch guitar player together with Sem Jansen on guitar and vocals, Tim Koning: Drums, Boris Oud: Bass guitar played the Main Stage at its highest level.  We were pleasantly surprised about the special guest, this time  a 2nd drum player joined  Tim Koning  on stage I honestly enjoyed their music as never before with the songs  Fire in the kitchen, Getting older, Be loyal, My shop, Little Wing, Things you do, Mississippi Queen, Strictly confidential, Whipping post.

Ryan McGarvey

He delighted us on the last day of this amazing festival.

I met Ryan before at one of his tours in Europe, and it will be, for sure, not the last time.  This Singer-guitar player with an amazing  string picker skill, won popularity because his hard work and his ability to mix music influences making  strong songs, award-winning, fierce guitar playing, an unstoppable work ethic and a permanent love for the blues flavored hard rock which  he pours from his soul.  Continue reading

22nd edition Ribs & Blues Festival Raalte NL. May, 20th 2018

Raalte, May 20th, 2018

Wake up with the singing of the rooster is not something that happens to me everyday but at this beautiful first Pentecost day 2018. Blue Sky and a fantastic weather forecast for the next days. On my way to the festival meet and greet friends Harry and Jan Postma from Assen. Erwin Java, will play his last show with “King of the World” they friendly remarked.

The organisation of the Ribs Blues festival in Raalte is satisfied with the number of visitors of the past few days. They estimate around 40 or 45 thousand visitors, however difficult to count because those days are free of charge and there were no tickets in order to count.

However the main stage counted with Seven gigs of one by one, top live music. The Brew, Danny Vera, Jeangu MacRooy, The Bintangs, Lachy Doley, King of the World, The Brandos.

Playing alternately six great bands: Ragtime Rumors, Dawn Brothers, Jackie Venson, Lisa Le Blanc, Hamish Anderson, Pert Near Sandstone, at the Delta Stage which could be reached after a walk through happy people enjoying huge ribs and beer at the Barbecue land some of them watching their kids at the Kids adventure land.

And the show may start with The British trio, The Brew, known for their explosive live shows. The BAM feeling, so familiar at the first Pentecost day at Ribs & Blues. After 4 show in Germany and on the last day of their May tour here in Raalte NL.

We enjoyed its psychedelic rock music. The band is very enthusiastic and has a lot of fun together. The Brew sounds are just delicious. Put music in boxes, is not about feelings, music is free! Inspiration for the whole day. This guitar, bass, drums streamlined by vintage amps band, clearly has the best rock classics. The band is authentic powerful and valuable for any Main Stage.

DANNY VERA  ( Main Stage) RAGTIME RUMORS (Delta Stage)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

A travel through my senses! The last time everybody knows Danny Vera for his constant presentation at Dutch TV RTL 7, for me, this was the first time to admire his live music. Danny and band transported us imaginary to the world of Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison en Elvis Presley with one by one wonderful songs as: How The dice Will Roll, I’ve Been Around, All Night Long, Road Rhythm Blues, Worn Out Man, The Devil’s Son, Jesus & The Outlaw, Running with My Boots On, Expandable Time, L.O.V.E, C’Mon Hold On, Utopia, Viva Las Vegas and Outro.

In the mean time Ragtime Rumors, winners of the European Blues Challenge made the audience RAG’n Rollen, so as they sometimes call their music. The real true is that we keep an eye on them, since their participation at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis last year. We tasted a mix of gypsy jazz and roots-blues in the sounds too.

Jeangu Macrooy (Main Stage) The Dawn Brothers, Jackie Venson (Delta Stage)

Paramaribo at the highlights! represented by The 24 years old, Jeangu McRooy and band. They coloured the atmosphere with hypnotizing Soul sounds. We have seen them at many festivals last year.

“We keep playing the old souls from the future” said “The Down Brothers”  That sounds familiar to me! There you are again young musicians from Rotterdam. Last year I met them at a popular festival in Katendrecht, where I yearly assist the stage manager. It was amazing to hear them, about their future plans and after a year to see them succeeding, check yourself if you like. Dawn Brothers With a great repertoire like this Milk truck, Get Down the Road, Sweet Love, Pictures, Summer Jam, Silver Spoon, Hunter, Vampire, Holy Water, How Come and Staying out late. They prepared us for the almost end of the afternoon shows at the Delta Stage.

It was for many the AAAAAH!!! moment at this point at the Delta Stage the amazing show of Jackie Venson; while Lisa Leblanc get interviewed at the Delta back stage and the Bintangs and Lachy Doley were getting ready to rock the evening at the Main Stage.

Jackie is a very talented Singer Song writer from Austin, Texas. She grew up with music, as long as she sings and plays she feels comfortable, the powerful guitar sounds are like a weapon to open the door to the place where she deserves to be. “Next year Main stage” asked the audience.
The Bintangs, Lachy Doley ( Main Stage) Lisa Leblanc (Delta Stage)

At this time the festival has reached its highest level of the day, crowd everywhere, almost impossible to walk from one stage to the other.  However photographer Walter Wouters kept the good work : check it out!  Kind thanks to the Media team for their great work and support too. However I watch some live streaming, but nothing goes above a live performance and as close as possible.  Lisa Leblanc at the Delta Stage was highly recommended by friends and honestly I was curious about her first live festival performance in  The Netherlands.

After her opening words “I am so excited to be here Ribs & Blues” and when she got the euphoric audience on her side,   we knew what we had to expect of her show.   Lisa Singer -guitar and banjo transformed in one sound.  Her ability to compose rousing, heart-wrenching narratives from everyday tales of love, friendship and heartbreak has been compared to the sharp wit of Courtney Barnett, the rambling honesty of Bob Dylan and the high-flying sincerity of Dolly Parton.

King of The World – Memorable farewell for guitar player and band Co-founder Erwin Java who was playing for the last time with King of the World.  Ribs & Blues festival is  almost home for Erwin Java since he performed 3 times with King of the World (Fokke de Jong, Ruud Weber, Govert van der Kolm ) and before with  the legendary Cuby & the Blizzards.  During his performance,  he emotional expressed his gratitude  to the members of the band, the festival organization and the band followers  remarking the song “I still can’t go home’   as a perfect metaphor for his new project ‘Keepin’t Real’

So we enjoyed one hour of pure blues music from those one by one talented Dutch Musicians.

The first time I met Hamish was at the beginning of his European Tour at Moulin Blues festival. After a short talk about traveling and his honest curiosity for different cultures.  To meet him and band at their last gig in The Netherlands was a symbolic message that reveal me that it won’t be the last time to him and band, on the road. He had become the very last artist to open for Blues Legend B.B. King. “the blues and rock is what I connect with” He remarked,  and you can feel it. “A beautiful sound that digs a deep groove and fills it with cotton balls” It feels effortless.  It comes from deep inside.

“People get really wrapped up in genre and labeling,” explain them,  but Ribs & Blues allows us to showcase all these different aspects of roots and American music that are really important to us and to the fabric of folk music today.”  Bluegrass feelings, Pert Near Sandstone  is a band that reaps the most ripe fruits of their musical courage and they shared their happiness with us!

THE BRANDOS (Mainstage)

The American rock band “The Brandos” was in charge to close the night at the first day Pentecoast 2018 in Raalte.  Dave Kincaid, Singer, guitar player, and songwriter,  lead the band to obtain the original sound from 1987, their popular  gold time with their first album ‘Honor among Thieves”and the singel “Gettysburg”. The amazing from the beginning till the very end performance made the long going crowd shout for more of their roots-rock  music with Irish and b.t.w.,  Spanish influences too.

It has been a long day with intense emotions for all. I truly thank all who I met those days. My feelings for music is the powerful engine that keeps me going in this great adventure called life.   Deep sleep and up to the last festival day!
